October 1, 2005 - Application Time

Rallybastard, Steve Chalmers, sent out notice that the rally was open and I mailed my application October 1st to the day.

January 21, 2006 - The Packet

I received my initial packet and rally number 52.  Seems the big difference this year for the main routes is that instead of 3 checkpoints in a rough circle of Utah, there will be only one checkpoint.  And, you have to make that checkpoint to get rally instructions for the second leg.  Where that checkpoint is, how far into the rally, and how different leg #1 is from leg #2 will undoubtedly be discussed and debated.  The tone of the packet suggest in my mind that leg #2 might have more bonii.

Follow-Up

Steve,

I had SUCH A GOOD TIME!!!!!

Enclosed is the $150 you loaned me. Thanks for salvaging what could have been a seriously horrid weekend. FYI, I came home and Provo Police had a message on my home machine. Wallet found with license, but no cash or credit cards. They're mailing the remnants to me. Credit card companies said when I called Friday no fraud at that point.

Actually, I'm relieved that I don't have to go to DMV now....the cash is a lesson.

Thanks for so much Steve. You know how to show a tourist an incredible time. It's all still a blur to me, but that ride put me in some zone of consciousness or mode I haven't ever been before...and I don't think it was all fatigue. I figured out I could ride with the big dogs this weekend. That was a big accomplishment for me personally in life.

After I got pulled over I was pretty bummed because of the point hit, but within about 30 minutes I put back into perspective. I got a warning and no real ticket, 700 miles in and run a good rally so far, why not run the last 500 miles just as seriously? "Ride it for yourself." I said.

I think my attitude carried over when I so quickly corrected you on missing the broken envelope seal. I was all high on purity of the riding experience........or just dog tired ;)

...and I appreciate what seemed like a gesture of a point split. I didn't expect it in the least. I'm not sure how I'm going to write it all up yet, but will share with you before I post to the public. I think a couple of my FJR buddies noticed a discrepancy so I smiled and suggested I got some sort of honesty bonus. They weren't upset or anything....they knew I rode hard. Personally, I'm chalking it up to there being nothing like the Utah 1088.

Anyway, thanks again for yours, your wife's, and everybody's hospitality. I love coming to Utah to play..

Matt
